Modest Swimwear??

Honestly, I'm not so sure modest swimwear actually exists!  Once you are wet, it is difficult to maintain modesty.  For this reason, our family has chosen "family only" swimming.  We do not swim with anyone outside our immediate family.  We have been to a few beaches, so our kid's can enjoy the sand and the ocean. We try to schedule those trips off season and/ or to areas where we can be alone.  I am going to try to give you some ideas on things we have learned and that work well for us.

This is a swimsuit that my oldest daughter wears.  The dark color with the lighter detail flower provides a good situation for an older girl.  I mistakenly bought a light color for her at first, with darker details and it was terribly immodest.  A pattern on the top is a must for us, solid colors generally show more details.

Those type suits generally cost between $45-75, which may seem like a lot of money.  My kids swim almost everyday during the summer, so they get their money's worth out of them.  I sometimes make the swimsuits.  All you need is a shirt that fits them that you don't mind taking apart to use as a pattern.  I generally buy the material in October or November on clearance.  Simply use the shirt for a pattern and make it come down to a "V" shape in the front center and the back center.  Then you attach a band of material (size depends on how long you want the skirt to be).  You can use some leggings to use as a pattern for the pants.

If you are not much of a seamstress or just want a shortcut like me, you can buy a swimming top known as a rashguard.  I always see them at Goodwill.  If you buy new, it's gonna be a lot more expensive.  Anyway, as you can see below, I cut the shirt to form a "V" shape in the front and back then add a skirt.  I just make a rectangle for the skirt and the length I base upon how long I want it.  I make the pants to match based upon some of her old leggings (use as pattern)
If you do not see at all, you still have options.  Here is an emergency suit.  We went to a beach and my daughter forgot her suit.  We found a patterned rashguard and some leggings that matched.  She covered the leggings with a black sarong.  It turned out to be perfect and very modest!
