Modest dress ideas

This project came from a size 10 girls mini skirt.  I cut off the bottom ruffle.  Next, I measured the bottom of the skirt, doubled it and cut a strip of fabric that length that was 5" wide.  i did that three more times, gathering each time and adding on strip after strip until I reached the desired length. The top light pink is the mini skirt part.

We found a girl's size 12 mini skirt that was just the right length for my baby girl and happened to be our favorite style of ruffle cotton skirt.  I took the side seams out (actually cut the sideseams out) and reduced the top waistline to the correct width.  I sewed it back together and she had a skirt to match ours!  (I didn't get it perfectly even as you may see in the first picture, next time I will use pins to match up the ruffles)

How to make an easy dress out of a t shirt...
First of all, I am not a professional seamstress (obviously)  My desire to sew came out of necessity. It is so difficult to find modest clothes for girls!  I took this long sleeve t shirt and cut it off around 4 inches under the sleeve.  Next, I doubled the fabric for the skirt and laid it under the shirt.  I made the width of the fabric 2 times the length of the bottom of the skirt.  The shape of the double skirt fabric looks like a giant rectangle.  You determine the length, based on the height of the child and how long you like it.  (we like them to our ankles!)
Here is a picture of the whole skirt.  I made the top a little smaller than the bottom (but you don't have to)  I sewed the sides of the skirt with pretty sides facing together.
I ran a gathering stitch around the top of the skirt and gathered it until it was the same width as the shirt.  Then I put the shirt upside down and right side out inside the skirt.  The skirt is inside out.  I pinned them at the seams.  Next, you just sew the top to the skirt and your done!
